Wu Earth

Heavenly Stems
戊、阳土

Definition

Wu Earth is the fifth of the Ten Heavenly Stems, belonging to Yang Earth, symbolizing high mountains and vast land—solid, stable, and enduring. Wu Earth governs ‘trustworthiness, steadfastness, and承载 (carrying capacity)’; like the earth bearing all things, its nature is still and firm rather than stagnant. Its disposition—firm or yielding—must be judged through the lens of regulatory qi (tiao hou) and configuration, not fixed labels: when prosperous it is magnanimous and accommodating; when weakened it may become obstructed and immobile.

How to Find

Wu Earth is the fifth Heavenly Stem; in a Four Pillars (BaZi) chart, it is identified directly from the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar or any other pillar. A Wu Earth Day Master refers to someone whose birth day’s Heavenly Stem is Wu.

Combinations

Wu-Gui Combination

Wu Earth combines with Gui Water; transformation into Fire requires Bing/Ding stems to penetrate and Si-Wu-Wei qi to gather—only then does true transformation confer nobility. Without transformation it is merely a binding combination; marital fortune cannot be judged from the combination alone.

Wu Earth Meets Jia

Jia Wood is the Seven Killings to Wu Earth—controlling the Day Master as a threat. It becomes a noble configuration only when controlled by Bing Fire, split by Geng Metal, or transformed by Ren Water; a weak Day Master without restraint portends disaster rather than ‘vitality’.

Wu Earth Meets Ren

Ren Water is the Indirect Wealth to Wu Earth; its fortune hinges entirely on regulatory qi: in summer Ren is the true useful god, in winter without Bing Fire the cold dampness traps the earth. Strength, warmth, and clarity must all be weighed together.

Examples

Born on a Wu Chen day: the Day Master Wu Earth sits on Chen Earth, indicating strong Earth element and robust self-energy—such individuals are solid, responsible, and dependable.
