Ji Earth

Heavenly Stems
己、阴土

Definition

Ji Earth is the sixth of the Ten Heavenly Stems, belonging to Yin Earth, symbolizing fertile farmland that nourishes all things. Ji Earth governs ‘stillness and depth, softness and resilience, encompassing brilliance, and steadfast trustworthiness’—like fertile soil fostering vitality, with a spirit of service. As Dijian Sui states, ‘not timidity, but the image of encompassing brilliance’; ‘low self-esteem and timidity’ are pathological manifestations of a depleted, unsupported state, not its inherent nature.

How to Find

Ji Earth is the sixth Heavenly Stem; in Bazi chart analysis, it is directly identified from the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar or any other pillar. A Ji Earth Day Master refers to someone whose birth day’s Heavenly Stem is Ji.

Combinations

Ji–Jia Combination

The combination of Ji Earth and Jia Wood represents the 'Upright Union', indicating integrity, honesty, and stable marital relationships.

Ji Earth Meets Bing Fire

Bing Fire generates Ji Earth—like sunlight warming fertile land, promoting growth of all things—indicating support from benefactors or mentors.

Ji Earth Meets Yi Wood

Yi Wood is the Seven Killings to Ji Earth; it forms a noble configuration of ‘killings-seal generation’ or ‘killings generating wealth’ only when the Day Master is strong and supported by Bing Fire for warmth or Gui Water for moisture. With a weak Day Master and no restraint, it brings pressure, toil, and health issues—‘vibrant vitality’ cannot be generalized.

Examples

Born on a Ji Chou Day: the Day Master Ji Earth sits on Chou Earth, resulting in strong Earth energy; such individuals are tolerant and patient.
