Day Master

Ten Gods
日干、元神、命主

Definition

The Day Master refers to the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar and is the core of BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) astrology, representing the native themselves. All Ten Gods relationships are calculated with reference to the Day Master. The strength or weakness (prosperity or decline) of the Day Master determines the favorable and unfavorable elements (Xishen and Yishen) of the chart, serving as the fundamental starting point for BaZi analysis.

How to Find

The Day Master is simply the Heavenly Stem of the birth date, directly read from the Day Pillar of the Four Pillars. For example, a person born on a Jia Zi day has Jia Wood as their Day Master.

Chart Meanings

Year PillarThe relationship between the Day Master and the Year Pillar reflects ancestral influence upon the native.
Month PillarThe relationship between the Day Master and the Month Pillar reflects parental and career-environmental influences upon the native.
Day PillarThe Day Master itself represents the native; the Earthly Branch of the Day Pillar represents the Spouse Palace.

Combinations

Strong Day MasterThe Day Master is prosperous (in season), well-rooted (in supportive Earthly Branches), and assisted (by same-element stems/branches); thus, it can bear Wealth and Officer elements. In such cases, Eating God or Hurting Officer should be used to release its brilliance, or Wealth and Officer elements may be employed to consume or control it.
Weak Day MasterThe Day Master is declining (out of season), poorly rooted (lacking supportive branches), and unassisted (no same-element support); thus, it cannot bear Wealth or Officer elements. Support from Direct Seal or Friend elements is required to strengthen it before blessings can manifest.
Balanced Day MasterThe Day Master exhibits moderate strength—neither excessively strong nor weak—indicating overall chart balance. Life tends to proceed steadily; however, when major periods (Da Yun) change, favorable/unfavorable elements must be re-evaluated.

Examples

A person born on a Jia Zi day has Jia Wood as their Day Master; the favorable and unfavorable elements (Xishen and Yishen) of their chart are determined based on the prosperity or weakness of Jia Wood.
