Combination
Definition
He (Harmony) is a harmonious interactive relationship between Earthly Branches, including the Six Harmonies and the Three Harmonies. The Six Harmonies are: Zi and Chou, Yin and Hai, Mao and Xu, Chen and You, Si and Shen, Wu and Wei. Harmony signifies cooperation, reconciliation, and union; when harmony occurs, harmony prevails. However, harmony is further divided into 'binding harmony' and 'transforming harmony', requiring case-specific analysis.
How to Find
Examine whether any of the Six Harmonies exist among the Earthly Branches in the Four Pillars of the BaZi. Zi-Chou harmonize into Earth, Yin-Hai harmonize into Wood, Mao-Xu harmonize into Fire, Chen-You harmonize into Metal, Si-Shen harmonize into Water, Wu-Wei harmonize into Earth. Any pair forming such a harmony constitutes 'He'. Whether elemental transformation (Hua) occurs must be assessed: Si-Shen harmony requires Ren or Gui Water to be revealed in the Heavenly Stems to transform into Water; otherwise it remains a punitive combination prone to fluctuation. Wu-Wei harmony transforms into Earth only when Earth Qi is dominant during Chen-Xu-Chou-Wei months, with Wu or Ji Earth revealed in the stems and no Jia Wood to break it; otherwise it is a Fire-Earth coexistence rather than a true transformation into Earth.
Attributes
Combinations
Zi-Chou Harmony into Earth
Water and Earth harmonize to transform into Earth, indicating successful cooperation and stable financial fortune; however, whether transformation actually occurs must be evaluated.
Chen-You Harmony into Metal
Earth and Metal harmonize to transform into Metal, indicating smooth financial prospects and harmonious marital relationships.
Si-Shen Harmony (Metal-Water resonance)
A Metal-Water resonant harmony; it transforms into Water only when Ren or Gui Water is revealed in the Heavenly Stems to draw out the transformation. Without transformation, it becomes a punitive combination marked by fluctuation, intellectual collaboration, and potential disputes—do not mechanically judge it as Water.
Wu-Wei Harmony (Fire-Earth coexistence)
A Fire-Earth coexisting harmony; it transforms into Earth only when Earth Qi is dominant during Chen-Xu-Chou-Wei months, with Wu or Ji Earth revealed in the stems and no Jia Wood to break it. Without transformation, it signifies propriety and trust, a Fire-Earth generating harmony—do not mechanically judge it as Earth.
Binding Harmony
Harmony without transformation—both branches mutually restrain each other, indicating delays and difficulty in advancing matters.
Examples
In a BaZi chart, if the Month Branch is Chen and the Day Branch is You, the Chen-You Harmony into Metal manifests, suggesting cooperative opportunities during middle age and prosperous financial fortune.
