Earth

Five Elements
戊己、土行

Definition

Earth is one of the Five Elements, representing the power of bearing, embracing, and nurturing. Earth's nature is substantial and stable, governing trustworthiness and inclusiveness. In terms of seasons, it corresponds to the end of each season (Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei months); its direction is the Center, and its color is yellow. Earth overcomes Water, is overcome by Wood, generates Metal, and is generated by Fire. When Earth is strong in a destiny chart, the individual tends to be steady and trustworthy; when weak, trustworthiness may be lacking.

How to Find

Examine the presence of Wu Earth and Ji Earth, as well as Chen Earth, Xu Earth, Chou Earth, and Wei Earth across the Four Pillars of the八字 (BaZi) chart, and assess Earth’s strength or weakness in conjunction with the Month Pillar. Earth is strongest during the end-of-season months (Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei months), weakest (in 'death' or 'extinction' phase) in spring, moderately strong ('prosperous' phase) in summer, and weakened ('resting' or 'imprisoned' phase) in autumn.
