Definition

Liu Nian (Annual Pillar) is a concept in Bazi fortune-telling representing the annual fortune, with the current year’s Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch designated as the Annual Tai Sui (Grand Duke Jupiter). The interaction among Liu Nian, the Natal Chart (Ba Zi), and the Decadal Luck Cycle (Da Yun) collectively determines auspiciousness or inauspiciousness for that year. One must not offend the Annual Tai Sui; offending it brings misfortune—yet if the Tai Sui coincides with a favorable or useful element (Xi Yong Shen), it instead signifies auspiciousness.

How to Find

Liu Nian corresponds to the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the current year—for example, 2024 is the Jia Chen Year, thus Jia Chen is the Annual Tai Sui. By comparing the Liu Nian’s Stem-Branch combination with those of the Four Pillars of the Natal Chart and the Da Yun, one analyzes the fortune and misfortune of that year.
